Canadian soldier wounded June 23 dies

Master-Corporal Charles-Philippe Michaud, 28, has died in a military hospital in Germany. He never regained consciousness after stepping on a mine in the Panjwaii district in Afghanistan June 23, 2009.

Col. Jean Marc Lanthier, commander of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, says Michaud served as a mentor to his fellow troops and was a model soldier. Michaud is survived by his wife, his parents and a brother.

TOTAL Coalition Casualties in Afghanistan

Since 2001, there have been 2,270 coalition deaths in Afghanistan--to date 1,438 Americans, 17 Australians, one Belgian, 346 Britons, 155 Canadians, three Czechs, 32 Danes, 24 Dutch, seven Estonians, 38 French, 31 Germans, two Hungarians, 22 Italians, three Latvians, one Lithuanian, four Norwegians, 16 Poles, two Portuguese, 11 Romanians, one South Korean, 27 Spaniards, two Swedes and two Turks PLUS two U.S. Defense Department civilian employees, one U.S. police trainer, one Nepalese security guard and four Canadian civilans (one diplomat, one journalist and two aid workers). Canada's Highway of Heroes and Route of Heroes

Between Trenton, where our fallen soldiers return home, and Toronto, there are 50 bridges crossing the highway--all have police officers, paramedics, firemen and ordinary folks (many wearing red T-shirts and waving the Canadian flag) saluting their heroes. And then from the Don Valley Parkway through downtown Toronto streets leading to the coronor's office, the sections used to carry our soldiers' final journey home have been designated the "Route of Heroes." Signs are posted along the way to mark the completion of our tribute to the Canadian Force's sacrifices this century.

157 Canadian military personnel have fallen in Afghanistan during nine years of fighting.
